Not Losing Weight on a GLP-1? Questions to Investigate

“I’m taking a GLP-1 medication, so why isn’t my weight changing?” This is an understandable concern, but there is no single explanation. The medication, underlying condition, duration of treatment, eating and activity patterns, and measurement approach all matter.

The problem: expectations and progress do not match

Weight-loss study averages are not promises for individuals. A person might see changes at a different pace or notice a shift in appetite before a clear weight trend appears. Temporary plateaus can also happen. A few daily weigh-ins cannot establish how a whole treatment plan is working.

Questions worth checking—not assumptions to make

  • What are you measuring? One reading differs from several weeks of consistent measurements. Weight can change with hydration and other factors.
  • How long have you been working with your care team? Follow-up milestones depend on the medication and individual treatment plan.
  • Are other factors affecting your progress? Sleep, physical activity, nutrition, medicines and other health conditions can influence weight.
  • Are side effects changing how you eat or feel? Symptoms deserve attention; they are not proof the treatment is effective.
  • Are you comparing unlike situations? Clinical trials, social media posts and another patient’s experience rarely describe identical circumstances.

What should you do instead of adjusting a medication yourself?

Speak with your prescriber about your actual weight trend, your goals, the medication you are taking, any symptoms and what reasonable follow-up would look like. Do not change doses, combine products or follow dosing advice from strangers. If you think a product was obtained outside a licensed pharmacy, discuss that immediately with a clinician.

What role can food and activity play?

A plan that supports adequate nutrition, regular activity and muscle strength matters for both health and sustainable weight management. Abruptly restricting food or copying a stranger’s workout can be counterproductive. Seek individualized advice when managing medical conditions or symptoms.

Does a plateau mean GLP-1 treatment does not work?

No single plateau proves that. Trends, adherence to prescribed care, benefits, tolerability and other factors all require clinical evaluation. Our weight-loss plateau guide covers the difference between a short fluctuation and an ongoing pattern.
